Backed By Science

It's a big claim, isn't it?

“Live longer, happier and healthier”.
Believe it or not, it's very real.

We have helped thousands reach optimal health and create the lives of their dreams.

In this article, you're going to discover:

👉 The “secret sauce” behind all of the incredible stories of healing surrounding SOMA Breath

👉 How this wisdom can help you reach the results you want starting today.

👉 The Breathwork Music Technology that could change your whole life in just 20 mins.

The Amazing, Inspiring Stories Of Healing

We have many stories of people who thought they were doomed to suffer illness forever and were left hanging by doctors without any more options.

Yet somehow, our lifestyle combined with Breathwork Music Technology and the magic of Intermittent Hypoxic Training has brought countless souls back to full health.

In many of these cases, the person's transformation has been so powerful, they became SOMA Breath Instructors and swore they would do everything in their power to help others improve their lives!

You can see some of their stories here >>

What Does SOMA Breath Exactly Do?

Here's a favorite example to illustrate:

Every summer, the SOMA Breath team runs an Awakening Retreat in the Alps.

Located at a high altitude, it offers epic landscapes, pristine air and water, and top-tier food.

The whole experience is rejuvenating and invigorating.

We spend hours every day alternating between super hot sauna and mega cold plunge and dive deep into ancient biohacking techniques based in breathwork, movement and music, designed to help participants experience the benefits of Intermittent Hypoxic Training.

What's the Science Behind All Of This?

There's actually a lot of research backing up what we do. Here's a great example:

A study called “Austrian Moderate Altitude Study (AMAS 2000)”, monitored the effects of spending three weeks at moderate altitude (1700m) on people with metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a set of conditions, like high blood pressure and high blood sugar, that can increase the risk of heart disease and other health issues.

The Study

It has been vastly studied and accepted that being at an altitude of 1500 to 2500m can stimulate the production of red blood cells, which carry oxygen. It also makes oxygen bind to hemoglobin (a protein in blood) in a way that it's easier for tissues to use that oxygen.

Training at high altitudes has been linked to improved athletic performance due to exposure to reduced oxygen levels, known as hypoxia. Such training practices have become common among athletes and health enthusiasts for preparation and regimen. The primary techniques for altitude training include sleeping at altitude, exercising at altitude, and Intermittent Hypoxic Training (such as SOMA Breath).

In this particular study, AMAS 2000, they wanted to see if these benefits also apply to tourists with metabolic syndrome, as it hadn't been studied before.

They had 24 men with metabolic syndrome go on a 3-week hiking holiday at 1700m altitude.

They checked oxygen levels in blood, amount of red blood cells, and indicators of red blood cell production before, during and after the trip.

Here's some of their observations:

  • Red blood cell count and related measures increased, which means more oxygen can be transported.
  • There was an increased production of erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone that helps produce more red blood cells.
  • The way oxygen binds to hemoglobin changed, making it easier for tissues to use that oxygen.
  • Overall, oxygen levels in the blood were better at the end of the 3 weeks compared to the beginning.

Conclusion: People with metabolic syndrome, when exposed to moderate altitude, show similar benefits in terms of oxygen transport and red blood cell production as healthy people do.

In other words, the study showed that a holiday at a moderate altitude can have positive effects on oxygen levels and blood for people with metabolic syndrome.

But these benefits aren't only for people with metabolic syndrome.

I goes much deeper.

High Altitude Training Overview

When the body experiences low oxygen conditions, it activates the Hypoxia Inducible Factor (HIF-1) protein, triggering reactions to enhance oxygen utilization.

Benefits from high altitude training include:

➢ Increased pulmonary oxygen absorption

➢ Production of the Erythropoietin Hormone (EPO) which boosts Red Blood Cell creation for better oxygen transport, and amplified oxygen delivery to tissues.

➢ Enhancement in the production and rejuvenation of mitochondria, leading to efficient oxygen use for energy.

In other words, participants feel like they have more energy, which leads to better sleep, faster recovery and a renewed sense of enthusiasm and passion for life!

Other benefits of High Altitude Training, Intermittent Hypoxic Training and SOMA Breath include reduced heart rate and blood pressure, increased release of the Human Growth Hormone, stimulation of fat metabolism, and reduced oxidative stress from free radicals.

Ah yes… reduced Oxidative Stress…

How To Slow Down Ageing & Improve Health

Oxidative Stress is actually one of the leading causes of ageing and disease in the world.

In simple terms, when the body has low tissue oxygenation, the oxygen accumulates in the blood.

And the same way that a car rusts when it's left outside during winter, your body also rusts when this oxygen isn't utilized to create energy by your cells.

Research has shown this to be one of the main causes of ageing and disease.

This is how High Altitude Training, Intermittent Hypoxia and SOMA Breath come into play.

As I mentioned earlier, research indicates that when the body is exposed to an environment with lower oxygen levels than normal, the body adapts with built-in mechanisms to increase oxygen delivery to the cells.

This means the Oxygen doesn't accumulate in the bloodstream, eliminating the harmful effects of Oxidative Stress and instead providing MORE oxygen to the cells so they can produce more energy!

So… How Does SOMA Breath Simulate High Altitude Training, Triggering Intermittent Hypoxia?

I'm glad you ask!!!

The Secret Sauce

In ancient Pranayama, the source of all breathwork techniques and modalities that exist today, there's one particular technique which is regarded as THE technique.

Its original name is Nishesha Rechaka Kumbhaka, which is Sanskrit for “Maximum effort you can hold your breath after exhalation”.
When a participant holds the breath AFTER exhalation for long enough, oxygen levels in the blood deplete and are not immediately replenished.

This creates a brief moment of hypoxia.

This is why it's called “Intermittent Hypoxic Training” and not “Chronic Hypoxic Training”.

While continuous lack of oxygen (Chronic) can be harmful, short intervals (Intermittent) can make the body adapt and strengthen, much like muscle training.

Normally, “hypoxia” (or a lack of oxygen) sounds scary because it can harm our body's cells. But when the body experiences short bursts of reduced oxygen, it can actually adapt and become stronger.

Imagine training your muscles by lifting weights; initially, it's tough, but over time, you become stronger.

It's a positive stress response. This brief moment of hypoxia created by breath holding is very short, usually around one minute, but it's enough to trigger these amazing benefits.

Russian scientists have studied short oxygen-deprived moments for decades. It's known as Intermittent Hypoxic Therapy.

Many yoga teachers believe Pranayama increases oxygen levels in the body. However, this isn't the case, and this misconception needs addressing. This is one reason why SOMA Breath proudly merges science with ancient practices and spirituality.

The real benefit comes from occasional low oxygen levels, because it is not about having more oxygen, but about helping the body become better at using the one it already has.

My mentor and good friend, Dr. Prakash Malshe, did some interesting research to achieve Intermittent Hypoxia with Pranayama techniques.

Out of the many Pranayama types, only Nisshesha Rechaka, holding the breath AFTER exhalation, can do this.

When comparing his findings to Russian studies on induced low oxygen levels, it seems this Pranayama technique is a simple way to get the same benefits.

Benefits Of Intermittent Hypoxic Training

  1. The Magic of “Low Oxygen” Moments (Intermittent Hypoxia): When we have moments of low oxygen (called hypoxia), our body triggers a system called “Hypoxia-Inducible-Factor-1” or HIF-1. This system helps in a bunch of ways:
  • Blood Boost: It can increase the amount of hemoglobin (stuff in our blood that carries oxygen).
  • Growth: In areas with less blood flow, it promotes the creation of new blood vessels. This is super helpful for our heart!
  • Protection: It creates nitric oxide, a molecule that protects our tissues. Fun fact: nitric oxide helps in stuff like widening our heart arteries and, interestingly, in erections. So, low oxygen moments can even help treat some forms of erectile dysfunction!
  • DNA Guard: There's something called p53 that's like a DNA bodyguard. It steps in to fix DNA or even shut down cells if the DNA is too damaged.
  • Stem Cell Helpers: Stem cells prefer low-oxygen environments. They thrive in these conditions, which can be super useful for treating diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Type-2 Diabetes (T2DM)

  • More and more people are getting T2DM, where the body doesn't use insulin properly.
  • Current treatments mostly involve taking drugs for a long time, but they can stop working.
  • Scientists believe that using stem cells might be a new way to treat this because they can potentially replace cells that produce insulin.

Coronary Artery Disease

  • This disease affects heart arteries, leading to heart attacks.
  • Apart from using drugs and surgeries, scientists are exploring more natural ways to clear blockages in heart arteries.

Osteoarthritis

  • Called “Joint Failure”, it's when joints wear out as we get older.
  • While our bodies naturally repair joint damage when we're younger, this slows down with age.
  • Scientists believe that stem cells can be used to help repair this damage.

Parkinson's Disease

  • It's a brain disease, mostly affecting older folks, causing shaking and movement problems.
  • There's no cure right now, but there are treatments to manage symptoms.
  • Scientists are looking into using stem cells to replace the damaged brain cells causing the disease.

Chronic Renal Failure

  • It's when the kidneys stop working effectively, which is a big health issue worldwide.
  • Even if kidneys are damaged, they still have the capacity to produce a hormone called EPO. This hormone can be boosted by experiencing short periods without breathing (hypoxia).

Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

  • ED means a man can't maintain an erection for sex.
  • An erection requires blood flow, which is influenced by various chemicals in the body, including nitric oxide.
  • Short periods without oxygen (hypoxia) can help increase nitric oxide, aiding in achieving an erection.
