The Benefits of Rhythmic Breathing

All functions of the body are rhythmic biorhythms (circadian rhythm/ sleep-wake, & menstrual cycle.) All biorhythms are subservient to the rhythm of breath & stress can throw biorhythms off balance. Rhythmic breathing offers numerous benefits to improve physical & mental performance.

Make Meditation Fun & Easy

With SOMA Breathwork Music

Breathing in beats is also a form of breath awareness meditation that has benefits similar to traditional breath awareness practices like vipassana and Tibetan meditation, but with the unique breath pacer and music technology, SOMA Breath makes the practice more fun and easier to do. This is a great solution for those who find it difficult to meditate while also being a great first step in your journey towards more advanced traditional techniques and practices.

It works by taking your awareness away from the verbal speaking part of the mind. This is also known as the Default Mode Network (DMN), considered the brain's version of the ego, the part of the mind that worries about the future, criticizes, judges and gets hung up on the past. Every word created by this part of the mind creates tension in the body. By quieting this inner voice, you can almost instantly relieve tension. Chronic tension from a constantly busy mind with excessive mind chatter can reduce blood flow to your organs, muscles and joints, leading to chronic disease and pain. However switching this off for even just a few minutes each day can bring about much-needed peace of mind and beneficial stress relief.

The Importance of Rhythmic Breathing

The Importance of

Rhythmic Breathing

Breathing in Beats, or breathing in a consistent rhythm, helps you achieve heart coherence.

Whether it’s 1:1, 2:2, 2:4, 4:4, or 4:8… as long as you breathe in a continuous pattern for at least a few minutes, you will be able to achieve heart coherence. When you are in coherence, the rest of the systems in the body also synchronize in a rhythmical way, functioning at its most efficient way.

Heart coherence helps us feel deeply relaxed yet totally energized. The more you practice this, the more you will notice that you are more resilient and better at regulating your emotions. With regular practice, you will even start sleeping better and waking up feeling really energetic.

When you breathe in beats and use diaphragmatic/belly breathing, it stimulates the largest lymphatic organ in the body, the spleen, creating a powerful cleansing effect. The spleen is responsible for the production and removal of blood cells, and it is also part of the immune system.

Breathing in beats alters the pH of the bloodstream and creates a stronger electromagnetic field and current to flow through the body.

Your quality of thought is also linked to your breath. HeartMath Institute has conducted studies showing that erratic breathing leads to erratic thinking and that smooth, consistent breathing leads to coherent thought.

The Rhythm Of Life

In 2011, students at Brazil’s Federal University of Minas Gerais mined tempo data from the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, the Billboard 200 album chart, and the Million Song Dataset for a tempo visualization project. They found that from the 1940s up until our current decade, the average tempo of our most popular songs fluctuated no more than 5 bpm, hovering between 117 bpm to 122 bpm.

Styles of dance music, such as house music that are rooted in African rhythms, are naturally timed to around 120 bpm. African drummers would play hypnotic rhythms that were instinctively coherent with optimum heart rhythms and used these combined with breathwork to get people into altered states of consciousness. All music production software is set to 120 bpm by default. A healthy natural resting heart rate is around 60 bpm.

There are 60 seconds in a minute. By breathing in beats, you would have 1 breath per second, and this tempo quickly creates heart coherence. 120/60 bpm is the natural rhythm of life.

By experimenting with different tempos of music, you can create different physiological states. Higher tempos of 130-140 bpm lead to more energy and an ecstatic feeling but can also create more stress, anxiety and even panic in the body, so they should be used appropriately.

Changing your rate of breathing to a time signature of 8/8 will create a much more meditative, relaxed state, or 2/4 will be a faster ecstatic state.

But the key is to breathe rhythmically, and doing it to music makes it a lot more fun – so Breathe In Beats and let the music flow through you!
